LIVE BLOG: 2012 NFL Draft - thoughts from The Flurry

Below are the thoughts of Flurry staff members Joey McMurry, Ronnie Grenier, Preston Hiefield, Trent Warren, Zan Schindler, Matt Scotton and Bart Batey on each pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Remember, this same post will update as the draft moves along, so just refresh this page after each pick to see our updated thoughts. Round 1 is at the top, and our thoughts on some big picks in the later rounds are below.

Each of Ronnie's picks is listed as well. Keep in mind all of his mocks are for the original team in the spot before all trades.

No. 1 - Indianapolis Colts select Andrew Luck, Stanford QB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Andrew Luck

Joey: Duh.
Preston: Duh.
Trent: Duh.
Ronnie: Duh.
Zan: Duh.
Bart: Duh
Matt: Duh.

No. 2 -Washington Redskins select Robert Griffin III, Baylor QB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Robert Griffin III

Joey: Duh.
Trent: Fits into the system. Mobile QB. Shanahan likes that.
Preston:  Expected, but I'm still not sold on him.
Matt: Excited to see what RG3 can do under Shanahan.

No. 3 - Minnesota Vikings trade pick to the Cleveland Browns for the 4th, 118th, 139th, and 211th picks. Browns select Trent Richardson, Alabama RB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Matt Kalil

Joey: This doesn't make sense to me. The Vikings weren't going to take Richardson, so why trade up to get him?
Preston: The drama began before the draft even started. The Cleveland Browns have sent the No. 4, 118, 139, and 211 picks to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for the No. 3 overall selection. At first glance, the trade makes almost no sense from a Cleveland fan’s perspective. It has been long known that the Browns have had their sights set on Trent Richardson. Giving up four picks to trade spots with Minnesota, who formerly had the third overall selection and have a wish list consisting of Morris Claiborne, Matt Kalil, or Justin Blackmon, has left more than a few heads scratching. Upon further examination, however, there were rumors that the Buccaneers may have attempted to trade up to pass the Browns and draft Richardson. So although the Browns gave up three extra picks, it is clear they will be able to land their running back of the future tonight.
Trent: Most physically gifted athlete I have ever seen. Browns will be a bit better from it.
Matt: Browns need a punch on offense, Richardson should give them that.
Zan: Doesn't make sense unless they were planning to trade the pick after acquiring it. Still though, he'll be a good substitute for Peyton Hillis, and able to jump in and play right away

No. 4 - Cleveland Browns trade up to No. 3 from Vikings. Vikings select Matt Kalil, USC OT.
Ronnie's mock pick: Trent Richardson

Joey: Makes sense to me. Vikings played the trading well. Huge hole at LT to protect Ponder.
Bart: Good call on Kalil. A franchise left tackle is more important than a corner.
Matt: Kalil will be a great addition to the Vikings' o-line. Ponder is going to need time to throw the ball.
Trent: Protect Ponder. Give him a chance there in the pocket. Mo Clay could have been chosen here but I like this pick.

No. 5 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers trade pick to Jaguars for picks 7 and 101. Jaguars select Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State WR.
Ronnie's mock pick: Morris Claiborne

Joey: After missing out on Richardson, the Bucs made the right move in trading down. Jags now taking Blackmon away from the Rams.
Matt: Jacksonville was dead last in pass offense last year. Blackmon should help bring them up at least a little.
Bart: It's ridiculous how much you have to give up to move up a few spots. Blackmon will be another Crabtree who can't get separation in the pros.
Trent: Blackmon gives Gabbert a target. Haven't had a receiver this good since Jimmy Smith.

No. 6 - St. Louis Rams trade pick to Cowboys for picks 14 and 45. Cowboys select Morris Claiborne, LSU CB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Justin Blackmon

Joey: Rams got screwed on this one. Good idea to trade after missing out on Blackmon. Cowboys are certainly the winners here.
Trent: Claiborne helps give the boys some secondary help. Cowboys have struggled the last few years with secondary issues.
Matt: Claiborne is going to be a great addition to Dallas and help a defense that needs it.
Bart: Agreed.
Preston: Agreed.

No. 7 - Jacksonville Jaguars trade up to No. 5 from Buccaneers. Buccaneers select Mark Barron, Alabama S.
Ronnie's mock pick: Melvin Ingram

Joey: Uhh..... Bucs got so screwed in this draft. Missed out on their top two targets in Richardson and Claiborne. Mark Barron is not deserving of a top 10 pick, but it's really all they could get.
Zan: Someone who would've gone 14th just went 7th. Enough said.
Matt: Seems like a bit of a reach.
Trent: Big jump for Barron but the Bucs lost their two top picks. Barron might help get that Buc D back like it use to be. Might...
Ronnie: This is why mocks are useless. Crap like this happens.
Bart: 14 is where he belongs.

No. 8 - Miami Dolphins select Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M QB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Ryan Tannehill

Joey: QB's are always wayyyyyy overvalued. Just another example.
Matt: Little risky, but could end up alright if he sits and takes the time to learn. Only started 19 games as a QB.
Zan: Only plus side: hot girlfriend.
Bart: Agreed with Zan. Damn.
Trent: Should have traded down and got more picks. Dolphins are my predicted last place team next season. Needed a QB though...
Ronnie: Nothing exciting to see here, now it starts to get interesting at pick 9 with either Fletcher Cox or Luke Kuechly going off the board. What's with Kiper getting on the Tannehill bandwagon? He hated him til now... Miami should have waited for next year and the Matt Barkley sweepstakes.

No. 9 - Carolina Panthers select Luke Kuechly, Boston College MLB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Fletcher Cox

Joey: Great pick. Scary MLB's now.
Zan: Not a big fan of the ACC, it'll be interesting to see how this pans out.
Ronnie: Great pick by the Panthers, as an Eagles fan I was hoping he would slip to 15 somehow.
Preston: Kuechly and Beason? Beast.
Bart: I think Kuechly is a steal here, he combines great instincts with above-average athleticism.
Trent: Underrated athlete in Kuechly. Matches well with Jon Beason. Time to step it up from the ACC though..

No. 10 - Buffalo Bills select Stephon Gilmore, South Carolina CB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Stephon Gilmore

Joey: Easy pick here. Bills need help at CB, and I think Gilmore is much better than his former counterpart, 49ers CB Chris Culliver.
Bart: Gilmore is a great athlete but I don't think he played well enough to be a top-10 pick. They definitely needed a corner and he was the best available.
Zan: Quite and humble demeanor after being picked, I like that. Buffalo is loading up their defense, first with Mario Williams. Also, good pick to match up against New England's offense.
Ronnie: I agree and say 10 is a bit high, but he definitely has great ball hawking skills and is better and safer than the next top rated corner in Dre Kirkpatrick.
Trent: Overall good pick. I think the Bills just went with best available here. Pass rusher last year in Dareus now a corner compliment.

No. 11 -Kansas City Chiefs select Dontari Poe, Memphis DT.
Ronnie's mock pick: David DeCastro

Joey: Chief's 3-4 defense could be really, really scary this year with Poe and Tamba Hali returning.
Bart: It's nice to see that ESPN isn't showing the guy on the phone before hes announced so it's still surprising.
Ronnie: Should have gone with DeCastro in my opinion. Need o-line help.
Trent: I wonder how serious of a football player he will turn out to be. Him and Tamba Hali might be a good punch on the Chiefs D line.
Matt: He can slip through cracks and get to the QB. See if it works out for the Chiefs.

No. 12 - Seattle Seahawks trade pick to Eagles for picks 15, . Eagles select Fletcher Cox, Mississippi State DT.
Ronnie's mock pick: Luke Kuechly

Joey: After missing out on Poe, Eagles made the right move to grab Cox.
Matt: Cox should be a good presence for the Eagles inside.
Ronnie: Once Kuechly was off the board Seattle probably felt they could trade down
Bart: Good pick by the Eagles. Cox is great value at 12. Cox is really disruptive. He reminds me of Tommy Harris when he was good.
Zan: Eagles could have one of the best D-lines in the league.
Trent: Cox, Cole, Babin, Jenkins, Patterson... Philly needs to bring back that D.

No. 13 - Arizona Cardinals select Michael Floyd, Notre Dame WR.
Ronnie's mock pick: Michael Floyd

Joey: With Larry Fitzgerald drawing most double-teams, Floyd could have a monster rookie season. Still need a QB to throw it to these weapons though.
Zan: Adam Schefter said the the Cards told Larry Fitzgerald they would draft Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd. Keeping their word to Fitzgerald, Arizona provides much needed offensive fire-power. Good for AZ, solid piece to the offense
Trent: Arizona bringing back the same wide receiver mentality back when they had Bolden and Fitz together. As a Charger fan, wish he was still on the board.
Matt: Arizona should have a better passing attack now. Floyd across from Fitzgerald could be fun to watch.
Bart: Good pick. Floyd was a beast even though Notre Dame's QB play was terrible.

No. 14 - Dallas Cowboys trade up to No. 6 from Rams. Rams select Michael Brokers, LSU DT.
Ronnie's mock pick: Mark Barron

Joey: Seems like a bit of a reach here. Could have traded down.Man the Rams got screwed in this draft with no receiver or corner.
Ronnie: Interesting to see if St. Louis goes defense with someone like Coples or possibly a reach for Hill. With DeCastro slipping this far the Ram's could also look to help add protection for Bradford. But instead, they go with Brokers. They could have traded down and still gotten him.
Preston: As a college football fan I would have liked to see Brockers stay in Baton Rouge another year. He would have likely been a top 10 pick in 2013 had he done that. Having said that, his potential is hard to ignore and I think he'll develop into a really good player in the league.
Zan: Sorry, Stephen Jackson and Sam Bradford. Rams clearly value the defense over your protection.
Trent: Typically, LSU defensive lineman are beast. I think the Rams should have gone O line here

No. 15 - Philadelphia Eagles trade up to No. 12 from Seahawks. Seahawks select Bruce Irvin, West Virginia DE.
Ronnie's mock pick: Quinton Coples

Joey: Uhhh..... Pass rush only.
Bart: Oh no. The first major reach. Why not Ingram or Coples?
Trent: Agreed with Bart.
Matt: Interesting pick to say the least.
Zan: I don't even know how to react. Huge reach pick by the Seahawks especially after trading down.
Ronnie: They needed someone to replace Hawthorne, but for me it's all about value and they could have gotten Irvin much later.

No. 16 - New York Jets select Quinton Coples, North Carolina DE.
Ronnie's mock pick: Courtney Upshaw

Joey: Jets and Rex Ryan love their defense. Should fit will in New York. Was going to be a top ten pick not too long ago. Rex Ryan should be able to fix his lack of effort issues.
Zan: I love the Jets fans. They make the draft much more fun to watch! I'm sure Rex Ryan will eliminate all "effort" concerns regarding Coples
Preston: God they would be talking about Tebow on ESPN right now...
Ronnie: Pictured Coples as a much better fit in the 4-3 system, but we'll see what Rex can do with him.
Trent: About time. Rex loves this!
Bart: Coples is great value at 16.

No. 17 - Cincinnati Bengals select Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama CB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Riley Reiff

Joey: Got the pick from the Raiders. Good job, Al Davis. Dre Kirkpatrick is still a good pick though. Bengals needs help on D, especially at corner. Really interesting how no o-linemen have gone off the board yet.
Ronnie: Well, I had them picking him, just with the next pick at 21. If you're going to gamble on a player though, Janoris Jenkins should be the pick.
Bart: Kirkpatrick is a difficult prospect to figure out. Sometimes I think he looks better than Claiborne and other times he looks like a 3rd rounder.
Trent: Kirkpatrick and SD born Leon Hall on the Bengals now. Kirkpatrick is an athlete.
Preston: #thuglife.
Zan: "Bengals are laughable. They have more convicts on that team than the "Mean Machine" from the Longest Yard." -Alex Stimson.

No. 18 - San Diego Chargers select Melvin Ingram, South Carolina DE.
Ronnie's mock pick: Chandler Jones

Joey: Improves their D-line. Good pick.
Bart: Ingram fits San Diego perfectly, fills a need, and is a great value. As a Broncos fan, I hate this pick.
Zan: As a Packers fan, I too hate this. Faint glimmer of hope he would drop to 28.
Trent: As a Charger fan I wanted DeCastro but I like this pick. You couldn't go wrong choosing an O lineman or D lineman. Biggest steal in the draft so far. Let's go Bolts.

No. 19 - Chicago Bears select Shea McClellin, Boise State OLB/DE.
Ronnie's mock pick: Nick Perry

Joey: Seems like a bit of a reach. I liked Ronnie's mock of Nick Perry, but the Bears d-line is always amazing.
Bart: McClellin is not a top-20 player. I think this is a bit of a reach.
Zan: Definitely saw Shea McClellin dropping much further than that. Clearly the Bears felt they can develop him, some mentoring from Urlacher will help too.
Trent: Reach. Curious to see where this goes.
Ronnie: Boooo to that pick.

No. 20 -Tennessee Titans select Kendall Wright, Baylor WR.
Ronnie's mock pick: Dontari Poe

Joey: Still not sold on Kendall Wright. Should be interesting to see if Locker and he do well.
Preston:
Zan: Wright adds some good depth to Kenny Britt and Nate Washington
Preston: Kendall Wright, an overrated player who knows to run in a straight line and catch a long bomb from RG3. In a conference where defense is optional, I'm always skeptical about offensive players from that conference, especially receivers.
Bart: Totally agree with Preston. I'm just glad that someone got him so the Broncos weren't tempted.
Trent: Wright and Washington are now the targets for Locker. I'm predicting them to finish towards the bottom of the pack though

No. 21 - Cincinnati Bengals trade pick to Patriots. Patriots select Chandler Jones, Syracuse DE.
Ronnie's mock pick: Dre Kirkpatrick

Joey: Bill Belicheck moved up in a draft? Wow....
Ronnie: Had the Patriots going with Andre Branch so kudos to them for getting an upgrade in Chandler.
Zan: Love the Pats taking Jones, opens up better players for the Packers to take. No need to worry about them anymore.
Bart: Jones didn't have the production in college, but he obviously has the measurables and pedigree.
Trent: Jones seems like a Patriot franchise player.

No. 22 -Cleveland Browns select Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State QB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Kendall Wright

Joey: Weeden has now been drafted by two different pro sports - Yankees in the MLB and Browns in the NFL.
Trent: I can see Weeden starting right from the get go. Knowledgeable
Matt: If he is good for 3-4 years I say this is a good pick. Also they need to try something different from McCoy.
Zan: So much for the "confidence" in McCoy. I personally like Weeden, think he's going to be a good player. Get ready for some competition, Colt!
Bart: Weeden has top 10 talent. The age is the only reason he fell. if he's successful right away, I think its a good pick.

No. 23 - Detroit Lions select Riley Reiff, Iowa OT.
Ronnie's mock pick: Cordy Glenn

Joey: First o-lineman off the board. Good pick to protect Stafford, especially since Calvin Johnson will get hurt with him being on the Madden cover.
Trent: YES! Lions are going to be a playoff team again this season.
Zan: Finally the o-linemen are going.

No. 24 -Pittsburgh Steelers select David DeCastro, Stanford OG.
Ronnie's mock pick: Dont'a Hightower

Joey. Damn.... Hoping he would fall to the Niners. But with Pouncey and DeCastro, that's a really good o-line.
Trent: Just more time for Big Ben to sit back in the pocket. He'll be effective for years to come.

No. 25 - Denver Broncos trade pick to Patriots. Patriots select Dont'a Hightower, Alabama LB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Michael Brokers

Joey. Patriots must really like these guys. Rare for them to trade up.
Bart: Hightower and Mayo is a scary ILB combo.
Ronnie: Patriots are going to be very dangerous next year bringing in Lloyd, Chandler Jones, and Hightower.
Trent: Preseason Super Bowl prediction...the New England Patriots now with Hightower. Wowzers.

No. 26 - Houston Texans select Whitney Mercillus, Illinois OLB/DE.
Ronnie's mock pick: Jonathan Martin

Joey: Missing out on Hightower led to this pick.
Bart: Barwin, Reed, and Mercilus will make a good pass-rush team.
Trent: Mario Williams replacement?

No. 27 - New England Patriots traded up to No. 21 with Bengals. Bengals select Kevin Zeitler, Wisconsin OG.
Ronnie's mock pick: Andre Branch

Joey: Need o-line help. Good pick.
Trent: Wisconsin big boy. Bengals are smart to address here.
Bart: Zeitler is a solid pickup, especially for a team that loves to run.

No. 28 -Green Bay Packers select Nick Perry, USC DE/OLB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Shea McClellin

Joey: Along with Clay Matthews, that pass rush is scary.
Zan: Nick Perry becomes the 77th 1st round pick for the USC Trojans. This school produces great football players, excited to see him in action next season and will provide an excellent opposite to Clay Mathews.
Trent: I can see Nick Perry being a pro bowler in the next couple of years...that being if the NFL continues to have the pro bowl. Perry and Matthews equals success.

No. 29 - Baltimore Ravens trade pick to Vikings. Vikings select Harrison Smith, Notre Dame S.
Ronnie's mock pick: Peter Konz

Joey: Secondary will be improved, but they didn't need to move up from the second round to get him.
Trent: This is their Mo Claiborne replacement. Just not Mo Claiborne.
Bart: Fills a huge need for the Vikes.
Zan: I don't quite understand this pick, if the Vikings are to trade up at least take one of the better players in the draft. They have a lot of holes to fill.

No. 30 -San Francisco 49ers select A.J. Jenkins, Illinois WR.
Ronnie's mock pick: Stephen Hill

Joey: What the... Stephen Hill is a better fit in my opinion. Jenkins is barely 6 feet tall and weighs 190 lbs. He's not a number one receiver. He has a good skill set, but if you're going to reach for a WR in the end of the first, take Hill. Jenkins would have most likely still been there in the second. The 49ers must really like what they see from Daniel Kilgore and Mike Person at RG because Cordy Glenn could start on the o-line and be great. Optimistically though, a lot of people thought Harbaugh and Baalke reached for Aldon Smith last year, so I do trust their drafting ability.
Bart: Jenkins over Hill?
Zan: Unbelievably dumb.
Trent: Huh????
Ronnie: Joey doesn't look very happy about this one...

No. 31 - New England Patriots trade pick to the Broncos, Broncos trade pick to Buccaneers. Buccaneers select Doug Martin, Boise State RB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Kendall Reyes

Joey: Bucs very active in the first round. Should be a good complement to Blount.
Zan: Bucs should have gone defense.
Trent: Doug Martin?? I'm fine with that. He's a good player and now that leaves the Chargers to possibly take LMJ!

No. 32 - New York Giants select David Wilson, Virginia Tech RB.
Ronnie's mock pick: Coby Fleener

Joey: That's a good pick. They need depth at RB. LMJ still on the board.
Trent: Ahmad Bradshaw 2.0.
Zan: I respect that pick. He'll provide good balance to Bradshaw.

That's it for the first round. Really, really quick this year. We'll have some updates to the post for the next few rounds and will post those to Facebook and Twittter so you can check back for the next six rounds. Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!

Here's our thoughts on some of the big picks in rounds 2-7.

No. 34 - Indianapolis Colts select Coby Fleener, Stanford TE.

Joey: That's a great pick by the Colts. Luck and Fleener played together in college and now they can tear it up in the NFL as well. Peyton Manning-Dallas Clark 2.0.
Zan: Good pick. Replacing Clark is a good idea.

No. 35 - Baltimore Ravens select Courtney Upshaw, Alabama OLB/DE.

Joey: That's scary to think of Upshaw in that new 3-4 scheme. Ravens get another solid back on defense.
Zan: A steal for the Ravens, he'll get great mentoring from Ray Lewis.

No. 36 - Denver Broncos select Derek Wolfe, Cincinnati DT.

Joey: Right position, maybe a bit of an unknown but D-lineman are very hard to project.
Zan: Relatively unknown in the past few months, he flew under the radar. Broncos see something special in him and fill a desperately needed void

No. 37 - Cleveland Browns select Mitchel Schwartz, California OT.

Joey: Schwartz before Jonathan Martin? That's simply crazy, and that's coming from a Cal Bears fan.

No. 39 - St. Louis Rams select Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama CB.

Joey: He's good value there. Could be a top ten talent if he didn't have off the field issues. Former first team All-SEC in 2010.
Zan: Concerns with off the field issues.

No. 41 - Buffalo Bills select Cordy Glenn, Georgia OL.

Joey: Glenn fell quite a bit in this draft and saw several offensive lineman go ahead of him. Great value here for the Bills.

No. 42 - Miami Dolphins select Jonathan Martin, Stanford OT.

Joey: About time he gets drafted. I wonder why he and Glenn fell so far.
Zan: Surprised Martin fell this far down, he'll make an impact right away on the Dolphins offensive line.

No. 43 - New York Jets trade up to select Stephen Hill, Georgia Tech WR.

Joey: Solid pick for the Jets. Needed a WR and traded up to get the one they want.
Zan: Jets draft a wide receiver, let's talk Tebow!

No. 46 - Philadelphia Eagles select Mychal Kendricks, California LB.

Joey: Kendricks is a fast and versatile backer who did very well at Cal. He could be great in an Eagles uniform behind a great d-line.
Ronnie: I approve.

No. 51 - Green Bay Packers trade up to select Jerel Worthy, Michigan State DT.

Zan: Jerel Worthy is going to provide substantial help to the Packers line. A great help to B.J Raji, the Pack's line is now becoming very dangerous.

No. 61 - San Francisco 49ers select Lamichael James, Oregon RB.

Joey: Well, this is why it's the most wonderful time of the year. LaMichael James under Harbuagh's guidance could be absolutely amazing. He doesn't have to carry the load completely with Gore in front of him, but he can be very effective as a complement and be used in the passing game. As a Duck, I'm ecstatic. As a 49ers fan, it doesn't necessarily fill a need, but the sky is the limit for James and with Gore getting older, this could be great for the future.
Zan: Would've loved to see LMJ as a Packer. Reported to be desired by Green Bay as they traded up. Happy for my fellow Duck!
